Predators with Purpose: Inside the Blood-Stained Legacy of the Fang Family

What happens when the enforcers of justice are also the monsters beneath your bed?

They burn. They judge. They devour. And they never apologize.

In the fire-scorched land of Hiraeth, few names command fear and fascination like the Fang Family. Aristocrats by title, predators by nature, the Fangs walk the razor’s edge between public nobility and monstrous necessity. Known for their striking beauty, political influence, and eerie calm, this family of soul-consuming Pesantas enforces the law not from behind court benches—but through ritualistic execution known only as The Cullings.

Bloodlines and Beasts: The Pesanta Curse

Descended from Catalan folklore's nightmare creatures, the Pesanta, the Fangs are beings of smoke and steel—terrifying shadowed predators whose fire-wielding abilities and insatiable hunger for human souls have shaped their destiny. Unlike their chaotic ancestors, the Fang family entered into a sacred pact with Hiraeth’s government: they may feed, but only on the irredeemable—criminals marked for death by the state.

It’s a compromise that protects society… and dooms the Fangs to a lifetime of orchestrated violence and tightly controlled rage.

The Code They Bleed For

Every Fang child is taught six rules that govern not only their survival—but their very identity:

  1. Discipline Over Desire – Hunger is never an excuse for recklessness.

  2. Family Before Everything – Loyalty is absolute; betrayal is unforgivable.

  3. Strength Is Survival – Weakness is a death sentence.

  4. Honor in the Hunt – Only the guilty may be culled.

  5. Fire Rebuilds – Pain fuels transformation; ruin births power.

  6. Never Bow, Never Beg – A Fang kneels to no one.

These rules are not philosophy—they are survival instincts forged over centuries, reinforced through ritual, fire, and blood.

Ritual, Power, and Pageantry

Publicly, the Fangs are aristocrats, cloaked in wealth and mystery. Behind closed doors, their rituals echo with primal legacy. The Last Supper, a grand gathering before each Culling, is a mix of celebration and solemn preparation. Afterward, the Post-Feast is sheer madness—soul-fed, fire-fueled revelry that borders on divine possession.

They live in opulent estates built atop magma veins, with underground tunnels, secret chambers, and candelit halls that smell of charred wood and something… sweeter. The smoke on a Fang’s breath carries a calming sedative scent—subtle but real—often leaving others dazed without understanding why.

The Enforcers You Don’t See Coming

Despite their agreement with the government, most civilians don’t know the true nature of the Cullings. Rumors swirl: that the Fangs take more than criminals, that they whisper to flames, that once you hear one coming, it’s already too late. Their Pesanta forms are nightmare-fuel incarnate—smoke-wreathed shadows with ember eyes and steel claws, able to dissolve through walls and inhale a soul whole.

No record is left behind. No body. No sound.

Just silence… and smoke.

Icons, Outcasts, and the Weight of Legacy

At the center of this dynasty are its members: each one a reflection of the family’s contradictions. Rexar Fang, the only sibling to resist the Cullings as much as possible, only attending one Culling every six months in order to survive, becoming both a black sheep and secret idol to his kin. Thorne, the family’s brutal enforcer. Elaris, its political puppeteer. Marwyn, its healer of wounds both visible and hidden. And Runa, the youngest, still clinging to softness in a house of fire.

They are beloved and feared, whispered about in courts and alleyways alike. Some hail them as dark saints; others, as monsters with a license to kill.

The Pack in Motion: 100+ Fangs, 46 Estates, One Purpose

Despite their polished image and aristocratic presence, the Fangs live more like a hive—or a pack. With over 100 members in the bloodline and extended branches, the Fang Family doesn’t reside in a single estate—they rotate between 46 massive, fire-warmed castles spread across Hiraeth, each built atop powerful Veil points or fire-rich land. Every estate is a fortress: obsidian halls, secret chambers, underground tunnels, and heated walls that match their internal soulfire.

Once a month, the entire family relocates to the next location in their ancient, unchanging schedule—a precise rotation dictated by duty and secrecy. This tradition ensures The Cullings are conducted without patterns and with minimal public scrutiny, a moving shadow of justice that never stays still long enough to be questioned.

Rexar, the outlier of the Fang legacy, chooses to live at one of these estates full-time—a sprawling, castle-like fortress nestled in the volcanic cliffs of Scrila. It's here, far from the main tide of the family's movement, that he builds a life with Kriia Thomas, carving out a fragile attempt at normalcy between hunts.

They live like predators in perfect formation. Everyone has a role. From educators to healers, cooks to Culling tacticians—each position is filled by a Fang wherever possible. Outsiders are only brought in when absolutely necessary, and even then, only from the Hawthorne Familythe only other bloodline Hiraeth deems socially and politically equal to the Fangs. The two families move through history side by side: in alliances, in policy… and occasionally in blood. It's in this closeness that Rexar Fang, the family's defiant second-youngest son, met his best friend, Vaelyn (Vee) Hawthorne, forging a bond that would eventually define parts of his rebellion.

Here are the 13 members of the immediate Fang family and the roles they play in this pyre-born dynasty:

  • Orin Fang (Patriarch): The cold, exacting leader of the family. Justice without compromise. Orders without question.
  • Zeraphine Fang (Matriarch): Elegant and iron-willed, she holds the family together through poise and power.
  • Thorne Fang (Eldest Son): The enforcer. A wall of fire and strength, unwavering in his devotion to tradition.
  • Sylwen Fang (Eldest Daughter, Thorne’s twin): The strategist. Quiet, cutting, and always three moves ahead.
  • Elaris Fang: The diplomat. Power behind the throne with a silver tongue sharper than any blade.
  • Garrik Fang: The hunter. Feral, brutal, and unrepentantly loyal to the thrill of the kill.
  • Nyxara Fang: The arcane. Guardian of forgotten magiks and ancient family rites.
  • Marwyn Fang: The healer. Gentle on the surface, steel underneath, with hands that mend and maim alike.
  • Varos Fang: The executioner. Silent, lethal, and bound by nothing but obedience.
  • Rexar Fang: The outlier. Charismatic, loyal, and unwilling to be what the rest of them are—even if it kills him.
  • Zyra Fang: The spark. Restless, artistic, and questioning everything their legacy tells her to accept.
  • Vesper Fang: The watcher. Quiet, young, and already more dangerous than most ever realize.
  • Runa Fang: The heart. The only softness left untouched, her innocence both shield and target.

Together, they make up the frontline of a legacy built on fear, fire, and unshakable family. A family where love is sharpened into weaponry and tradition is carved into bone.

Why the Fangs Matter

In the grand tapestry of Hiraeth’s power struggles, the Fangs are both scalpel and flame—surgical and savage. They are the answer to unchecked darkness… but never without cost.

They show us that justice, when wielded by monsters, is still justice—just sharper, darker, and etched in ash.
